Arcs, Windows, Portals: Architectures of Time

For those who lived through it, the pandemic radically shifted perceptions of time. Spatially bound yet digitally connected, time seemed to slip, loop, pool and fracture in new ways. For a moment, the elastic threads between time and space were laid bare.Though the world has since largely resumed its pace, these experiences linger.

Meanwhile, patterns of relation once considered to be of the past — colonialism, fascism, misogyny — re-emerge under new names. Digital media amplifies these echoes, opening uneasy portals between now and then, ones that our creative tools often help build, whether we notice it or not.

In this seminar, we ask: How can time-based media be used to express architectures of time: gaps and rifts, pockets and portals, inversions and folds? What temporal logics are already built into the tools we use to create?

Over the course of X days, we will explore these questions through a combination of short screenings, readings, discussion, and playful practical tasks.
